Alpha Dog
Training
Be The
Pack Leader
In order to communicate and deal with your
dog effectively, you must understand the dog's
basic instinctual nature. The dog is a pack
animal and each pack has a pack leader,
otherwise known as the alpha dog. The alpha dog
is the most dominant in the pack and all others
submit to him. He eats first, takes a higher
position when he sleeps and the alpha pair are
the only ones to mate.

training and dog psychology, the best guide is:

Training guide which covers all
areas of dog training, dog care and dog
behavior problems. It has a bonus book
"Secrets To Becoming The Alpha
Dog".
If you want your dog to behave as you
desire, it is absolutely essential that you put
yourself in the alpha dog position. The alpha
position isn't fixed and from time to time the
alpha dog may be challenged for his
position.
This means that you continually need to
position yourself as the alpha dog. You cannot
just do it for a week and then think that it
will stay the same forever after that.

As with humans where adolescents start to challenge their
parents, so in the pack it's common for adolescents to
challenge the alpha dog. You should be aware that this is a
time to be wary and to secure your alpha position.
Adolescence is around 6 to 14 months.
You should understand that all of your family need to
position themselves as more dominant than your dog, not just
you.
Meal Times
Meal times are a very significant time when you can make
your alpha position clear. Jan Fennel, the Dog Listener,
introduced the useful technique of "gesture eating" which she
suggests you only need to engage in for a couple of weeks. All
human members of the household need to join in with this
activity.
The technique is that all family members eat something
before the dog is given its meal. You can just use a biscuit or
other small item. Have the biscuits on the counter near the
dog's bowl, so that it looks like you are taking the biscuits
from the dog's bowl. Then when each family member has taken and
eaten their biscuit without looking at or talking to the
dog, you can place the dog's bowl on the floor.
Note that you should never feed your dog scraps from the
table when you are dining. This would be quite contrary to
showing your dominance and would also devalue the use of food
treats as a reinforcement in training.
Nothing In Life Is Free (NILIF)
As mentioned in the main page for this section, NILIF is a
great way to put yourself in the alpha dog position. The dog
must not get any attention or affection without first giving
something to you such as a desired behavior. All activities are
at your instigation not at your dog's. When the dog demands
your attention, you just ignore it, looking or turning away. Or
you ask it to sit. Once it obeys a command, you can give it
attention and affection.
If your dog wants to go outside, you first get it to obey a
command such as going to its crate. Only then do you let it
out.
These are some of the main points of alpha dog training.
