Dog Boredom - A Very Common
Problem
|
For the best
guide to dealing with your dog's boredom, check
out Secrets To Dog
Training guide. It's the best
value and most comprehensive guide I've
seen.
All dogs have a need for companionship and
diversion. They don’t cope well if left alone
for a long time with little to do. It’s really
your responsibility as a dog owner to make sure
they lead an interesting life. They need
physical and mental stimulation just as
children do.
If you don’t, his boredom will manifest in
ways that you will not appreciate:
- Destructiveness such as chewing
inappropriate things in the house
- Continual barking
- Obsessive-compulsive behaviours like
tail chasing or pacing
- Digging holes
- Hyperactivity
- Disobedience
- Laying about apathetically

The first point to attend to is to make sure he gets
sufficient exercise every day. Dogs naturally alternate between
strenuous activity and rest. If he doesn’t get sufficient
exercise, boredom is a likely consequence.
It’s not recommended to leave a dog alone for more than four
hours. If you must, then arrange for a dog walker or friend to
take it for a walk during the time you are away.
In the wild dogs spend a lot of time just looking for food.
One interesting activity for dogs is provided by dispensing dog
toys and interactive dog toys. These are toys that are
interesting and can also be stuffed with food. When your dog
interacts with them in the right way they dispense treats.
Examples are the Kong toy, the Buster Cube and the Waggle. You
can also hide dry dog food around the house so that he can
spend a long time trying to find it all.
Provide your dog with plenty of other toys and chews – dogs
love to chew. Don’t leave the same toys around all the time:
rotate them for variety.
Do some obedience training regularly – this is an activity
where you give him a lot of attention and keep his
interest.
Dogs love to play games – so schedule some game playing
sessions regularly also.
Certain breeds have been bred for certain activities such as
hunting. You should try to satisfy the natural instincts of the
breed by games which mimic hunting for example.
It’s natural for dogs to be with their own kind – so give
him opportunities to meet and play with other dogs. One chance
your dog has to meet other dogs is on walks. Another great way
is to take him to dog training classes. This is especially true
for puppy training classes which are mostly about
socialization. Another way is to get involved in dog sports
like Agility or Flyball.
If getting involved in dog sports isn’t for you, you could
always organise a local get together for dogs to play
yourself!
If you leave your dog in a yard when you are out, think
about how you can make it more interesting for him. You could
make a digging area, for example, where he’s allowed to dig.
Use a soft sand and dirt mix in the area. Hide some treats in
the area so he has to search them out.
You can also make your yard more interesting by adding some
ramps or tunnels. Be careful not to put anything near fences
that might allow him to escape the yard.
Whether you leave him inside or outside, if you can leave
some background music playing, this may help.
