Easy Puppy Crate
Training
|
Easy puppy
crate training is the most
stress-free way to house train your puppy.
I highly recommend that you get a suitable
puppy crate before you bring a new puppy home
if he hasn't already been house trained.
The most usable is the plastic dog crate which
also has a handle and can also be used to take
your animal to the vet or wherever.
If you want
a complete guide to the whole area of crate
training a puppy, then check out the
Secrets To Dog
Training guide.
A dog crate should be just big enough that
your puppy or dog can go into it, turn around
in it and lie down in it. The puppy when used
to it will adopt it as its den or nest. The
important fact is that a puppy will not soil
its own den. Therefore, you can put you puppy
in the crate for periods of time when you
cannot keep a watch on him.

|
However, if the crate is big enough
that it can make a den in one corner and have
space in another corner which is outside its
den, it may soil that other corner. So don’t
get one too big or you will defeat your
purpose.
You can see an example of a plastic crate
above. The dog crate has several uses:
- it will become a den which your puppy
will love
- a safe place you can leave your puppy
for short periods
- it's an invaluable aid to house
training
- the puppy gets used to chewing on the
toys we provide in the crate, rather than
household objects and, especially,
dangerous objects like electric wires
- transporting your puppy safely
|
 |
An important point to remember is that we want your
puppy to associate the crate with a positive frame of mind. He
should feel safe and enjoy being in it. So, it should never be
used as a punishment. The puppy should first be lured into the
crate with small treats.
Begin by giving small treats near the crate and gradually
put them further inside. Allow the puppy to get familiar with
the crate. Once he is happy to go in for treats you can close
the door briefly and then open again. Gradually increase the
time you shut the door for. With the door shut, you can give a
few treats through the wire mesh.
Safety Points
A few safety points about using a puppy crate when you are
going to leave your puppy alone for a period:
- Don’t leave anything inside that the puppy may choke on
– this could include chew toys which may break up. Only use
safe chew toys
- Remove any collar, especially a choke collar so that
there is no chance of it getting caught and choking the
puppy.
