Please note that the
SitStayFetch dog training guide has now been updated and
renamed Secrets To Dog Training. You'll find a review of the
new Secrets To Dog
Training guide reviewed here.
In order to write this SitStayFetch review, I have looked in
detail at the guide and I was very impressed with its
comprehensive coverage of the subject. It is very detailed and
covers how to deal with all the common dog behavior problems
that dog owners are looking for advice with. It also gives
advice on how to prevent these problems. Daniel Stevens, the
author, is a well-known and experienced dog trainer. He gives
step-by-step advice that any dog owner can follow. All the
advice has stood the test of time and comes from Daniel's own
real-life experience as a professional dog trainer.
What's Covered?
The guide is structured into three levels from introductory
to advanced. Each level comprises three chapters each: one
chapter about understanding your dog, one about your dog's
well-being (caring for it, problem behaviors) and one about
training methods.
First Level
This level covers what you need to know about:
- owning a dog
- choosing a puppy or dog
- information about the different breeds
- which breed to choose depending upon your
lifestyle
- where to get your puppy or dog from
- information about diet.
It covers the basic aspects of caring for your dog:
- preparing your home for the dog or puppy
- equipment you need to get
- handling and grooming, stages of growth
- which toys are best
- choosing a veterinarian.
It also introduces basic dog training methods including
crate training.
Second Level
At this level, you are taken to a deeper understanding of
your dog and its instincts including:
- information about the dog's senses,
- how dogs communicate with body language and signals,
with their facial expressions and the sounds they
make.
All the common dog behavior problems such as aggression,
biting and chewing are dealt with in great detail with clear
instructions on how to proceed. Dog obedience training using
the basic commands like "Sit", "Come" and "Heel" is
explained.
Third Level
At this level, you are taught the dog whispering method
which relies upon using the natural instincts of the dog and
understanding its body language. Dog whispering is more a
general philosophy of training than a particular technique. It
involves understanding clearly the dynamics within a dog pack
and using that to our advantage. If you've watched Cesar Millan
on television you will know the concept of dog whispering and
how it can rapidly change dog behavior problems. Dog whispering
emphasises establishing yourself as a calm assertive leader -
the pack leader or alpha dog. You become a student of dog
behavior and dog psychology and use it to your advantage.
Health-related problems are covered at this level and also
more advanced obedience commands and tricks.
What I Particularly Like About It
Personally, I like the dog whispering approach to training.
I have found that if I understand dog behavior and psychology
in depth, then it makes training a dog so much easier. Because
I'm not fighting against the natural behavior and instincts of
the dog but rather taking advantage of it. It's a bit like the
martial arts of aikido and tai chi where you use the force of
the opponent rather than blocking it directly.
I also like that it uses positive reinforcement methods and
no punishment is involved. You don't need to shout or rub your
dog's nose in anything which are hopefully outdated methods
today.
Bonuses
There are several bonuses that come with the book. Firstly,
you get an audio version which you can burn to CD or download
to your mp3 player and listen to in your car or anywhere you
like. There's a separate guide to dealing with dog aggression
and another one about house training your dog. There's a guide
to grooming your dog and one on becoming the alpha dog or pack
leader. Finally, there is a guide to security training your dog
to protect yourself, your family and your house and
possessions. I know I got a couple of other bonuses - so I
wouldn't be surprised if you get more. They seem to like
over-delivering.
If you want an idea of what the guide is like you can sign
up for their free six day mini course. Or you can order the
guide itself. There's a 60 day guarantee - so you can always
get a refund if you're not satisfied with it. I can't imagine
anyone being disatisfied with the wealth of material
provided.
SitStayFetch Review Verdict
I think the SitStayFetch dog training guide more
than delivers in the wealth of details and in the quality of
information. Unless you want to specialise in some area of
dog training like clicker training, I can't imagine you
would need much more from a training guide. I hope you have
found this SitStayFetch review helpful.
